Buy Rainbow: Celebrating Community and Connection

Last month, I had the pleasure of hosting a pop-up stall at Buy Rainbow, a vibrant market fair celebrating LGBTQ-owned and operated businesses. Organised by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Association (SGLBA), this inaugural event was part of their initiative to return to grassroots efforts—creating spaces that champion community, connection, and support.

The origins of Buy Rainbow trace back decades, to a time when Sydney’s LGBTQ business owners united to promote their ventures and uplift their community during and after the devastating impact of HIV. This grassroots initiative eventually evolved into what is now known as Mardi Gras Fair Day, a keystone event in Sydney’s Mardi Gras festival. While Fair Day has grown into a massive celebration, welcoming large corporate sponsors, Buy Rainbow offers something distinctly local—a return to a more intimate, community-focused experience. So, when the SGLBA invited Chocolat Philippe to participate, I jumped at the chance.

A Day of Highlights and Heart

For its first edition, Buy Rainbow was an incredible success. I was deeply honoured to kick off the day by selling my first chocolate bars to none other than Clover Moore, the Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney. Later, the Deputy Lord Mayor also stopped by, sharing glowing feedback he’d heard from the Mayor about Chocolat Philippe.

The standout of the stall was undoubtedly our La Pride box—a product designed with events like this in mind. This initiative is particularly close to my heart, as 20% of each sale supports the Education Fund, an organisation offering grants to LGBTQ individuals over 30 who are looking to transform their lives through education.

Supporting the Education Fund

Decades of research tell us what many in our community already know: LGBTQ youth face disproportionately high rates of rejection, bullying, and discrimination. These experiences often lead to disrupted education and limited opportunities. The Education Fund steps in where society falls short, helping individuals rewrite their stories by providing access to education and empowering them to achieve their dreams.

By purchasing a La Pride box, you’re not just savouring exceptional chocolate—you’re contributing to a cause that changes lives. To learn more and support this initiative, click here.
