Our Origins

Colombia

The Tumaco region in Southwest Colombia has long been renowned for its cacao, a commodity with a history deeply intertwined with the region’s complex political conflicts and narco-related criminal activities. Despite the region’s ideal climate and soil conditions for cacao cultivation, the quality of the cacao beans suffered for decades. However, a turning point came in 2011 when Cacao Hunters entered the scene, confronted with a startling sight of cacao drying on any available surface, even the roads. Recognising the potential for improvement, Cacao Hunters joined forces with three community cooperatives to introduce centralised processing and drying techniques. This collaborative effort led to a significant increase in farmers’ income.

The resurgence of interest in cacao in Tumaco brought about a series of positive changes, especially for the predominantly Afro-Colombian population. The cooperatives worked diligently to identify and conserve native cacao genetics from the region, maintaining a clonal garden to distribute seedlings to more farmers. This approach not only ensured better disease resistance but also provided an alternative market for farmers to sell their high-quality cacao.

The success of these cooperatives in Tumaco signifies more than just the production of delicious and chocolatey cacao. It represents a path toward stable economic growth and improved security in the region. By offering sustainable alternatives to coca production and involvement in narco groups, cacao farming has become a viable and empowering livelihood for smallholder farmers. Through their resilience and dedication, these cacao farmers have not only preserved their cultural heritage but have also created a brighter and more sustainable future for their communities. Their efforts serve as a testament to how the revival of a once-troubled crop can positively impact the lives of many and contribute to the growth and prosperity of an entire region.
