Our Origins

Nicaragua

Embark on a sensorial journey with Chocolat Philippe as we proudly introduce the San Juan de Las Mulas cacao, cultivated by dedicated smallholder farmers in Matiguas, Central Nicaragua. This exceptional cacao boasts a delightful harmony of sweetness, nuttiness, and fruity undertones, reminiscent of yellow fruit and melon. It comes as no surprise that this outstanding cacao was honoured with the prestigious Cocoa of Excellence award in 2019.

Behind this award-winning cacao are 350 smallholder farming families, integral members of the Flor de Pancasan cooperative. These families directly benefit from higher prices for their premium cacao, coupled with organic and SPP certification. Empowered by the cooperative, they undergo comprehensive training and gain access to essential agricultural supplies, fostering a sustainable and thriving community.

The cacao thrives in a unique agroforestry system, where it is intercropped with other food and cash crops. This not only enhances the biodiversity of the region but also acts as a bulwark against deforestation while safeguarding water availability. Committed to sustainability, these farmers employ organic fertilisers exclusively and refrain from using pesticides, ensuring a pure and environmentally friendly cultivation process.

With every sumptuous bite of Chocolat Philippe, you are not only savouring a delectable treat but also supporting a community-driven initiative that champions quality, sustainability, and ethical practices. The San Juan de Las Mulas cacao encapsulates the essence of excellence, and its journey from the hands of these skilled farmers to your palate is a celebration of craftsmanship and conscious farming.
